Anyone else feeling challenged here?

According to Apple, "Movie files with the extensions .mov, .mp4, .m4v, and .3gp are supported." However, I can't get a .mp4 file to play across WiFi.

If I export from QTPro, *with* a reference movie, I get a .m4v file, and it works just fine. No surprise there.

However, if I *save* from QTPro, using the WiFi setting, which as far as I can tell exports the exact same file (.m4v), I can't get this file to launch via a reference file via WiFi. This is the dreaded "This movie could not be played" error that's all over Google. Examining the two files via MediaInfo Mac doesn't reveal any differences.

I really want to use a .mp4 file for compatibility purposes (Flash, QT, and Real!). I'll keep at it and let you know if I discover anything.

UPDATE: The short answer is "make sure you use Baseline profile, not Main."

Using this you can produce an MP4 file that the iPhone will happily play. The one I still haven't figured out is why the QTPro "Save as" profile produces something the iPhone will not play, but since we won't be using that on a production basis it's not really a problem.
